Coventry, Vermont

Coventry is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,014 at the 2000 census. The final concert of the band Phish was held in Coventry on August 14-15, 2004. The concert was the single largest gathering of people in the town's history. Due to heavy rains, many fans had to be turned back due to bad weather. Even so, with 70,000 tickets sold, Coventry's augmented population was the largest in the state's history, outranking Burlington, Vermont, which only had around 39,000 people in the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 71.7 km² (27.7 mi²). 71.1 km² (27.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.80%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,014 people, 379 households, and 286 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.3/km² (36.9/mi²). There were 435 housing units at an average density of 6.1/km² (15.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.63% White, 0.30% African American, 0.99% Native American, 0.10% Asian, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population.
There were 379 households out of which 35.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.3% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $33,487, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $26,528 versus $18,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,788. About 11.9% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.8% of those under age 18 and 11.7% of those age 65 or over.
