At present this template is intended to be used through Template:Country, such as: {{country|flagISO|USA}}.

• ISO in this context refers to an International Organization for Standardization standard for country codes.
• ISO 3166-1 is the standard for country codes used.

• Aliases are done by having one template for each country or alias (this is called a template array).
• Alias templates follow the pattern country_ISO_alias_Name.
  • Contents of the country alias is the name of the country's Wikipedia page (ie, United States).
• Alias templates for flags follow the pattern country_flag_ISO_alias_Name.
  • Contents of the country flag alias is the name of the country's flag image (ie, us or Us); the prefix Image: is added by {{country_flagISO}}.

It seems to me that this whole system could benefit from more use of redirects. Note that templates can redirect just like articles do! Thus, this template should simply be defined as

[[Image:{{country flag alias {{{1}}}}}|25px|{{country alias {{{1}}}}}]] [[{{country alias {{{1}}}}}|{{{1}}}]]

with, for example, Template:Country flag alias RUS being a redirect to Template:Country flag alias Russia, and Template:Country alias RUS being a redirect to Template:Country alias Russia.

I think I'll go ahead and change the template. It appears that won't break anything, though I haven't checked it for all the ISO codes. dbenbenn | talk 19:44, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Reverted. You broke the ISO aliasing, which exists specifically to restrict to ISO country codes. There are separate definitions for the ISO codes. Using the non-ISO templates brings in a pile of nonstandard convenience abbreviations. (SEWilco 20:11, 12 September 2005 (UTC))
