Cousins Subs was founded in 1972 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Originally there were five locations, which included a downtown location as well as restaurants near the Marquette University campus as well as the city's Brady Street district. They are famous for their party subs, which can be ordered in two, four, and six foot portions. By 2000, they have grown to almost every city in Wisconsin. In the time Hurricane Katrina hit, they encountered a shortage in tomatoes. Their main competition in the area is Subway, Jimmy Johns, Quiznos and Erberts & Gerberts.
The very first franchisee of Cousins Subs was James Valentine. He opened the franchise in 1985 at Loehmanns Plaza (Now called V.Richards Plaza) in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Located at the Southeast corner of the intersection of Calhoun Road and West Bluemound Road, the restaurant is still in business today, and hence is the oldest Cousins Subs franchise.
Although the majority of franchises remain in Wisconsin, Cousins restaurants can be found in 12 states, including 13 stores in Arizona and locations in California and Texas.
In October 2004, Cousins Subs announced it will sell 32 of its 40 corporate-owned stores in the Milwaukee area to franchises, a move the company said will allow it to adopt a more traditional franchise growth model.
