County of Empúries

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The County of Empúries (Catalan, Comtat d'Empúries) was a medieval county centred on the town of Ampurias and enclosing the Catalan region of Peralada.

The first known counts were probably Goths. In 817, it was united to Roussillon under Count Gaucelm. In 832, it was given to Berengar the Wise, whose vast holdings included Septimania, Barcelona, and Toulouse, as well as many other regions in Catalonia. After his death (835), it was assigned to Sunyer, son of Count Bello of Carcassonne, with him commenced a new local dynasty.
