The Countryside Stewardship Scheme was an agri-environment scheme run by the United Kingdom Government from 1987 to 2004. Originally introduced by the Countryside Commission, the scheme aimed to improve the environmental value of farmland throughout England.

The Countryside Stewardship Scheme will be superseded in 2005 by the Environmental Stewardship Scheme. Environmental Stewardship will consist of 2 tiers, the Entry Level Scheme and the Higher Level Scheme. The first will be aimed at the majority of Farms in England and it is expected that there will be a high takeup of this option. The aim is for landowners to receive a modest sum of £30/ha in exchange for carrying out environmentally practices according to a "menu" offered by DEFRA.
