Counter-Strike Manager, often referred to as 'CSM', is an online browser-based game where the main purpose is to administrate a fictitious team of Counter-Strike players and its staff (trainers, PR-managers, doctors and scouts). CS-Manager.com launched in mid-2003 with a pretty simple design and gameplay, but changed its appearance in March 2005, when version 2 was released. The site has an increasing user base of approximately 30.000 members spread throughout Europe and USA.

The starting fee is around 1 Euro and it costs approximately 1 Euro a month to obtain the VIP-package that enables users to watch their games in a 2D-simulated environment. However, users don't have to pay for this.

Managers are also able to decide how the clans financial assets are being used (buying new players, equipment for your current lineup etc.). Most new players are to eager and often go bankrupt, and therefore have to wait until a new clan is given to them.

[edit] Leagues

Users play in leagues, consisting of 16 clans, ranging from (in some countries, depending on the amount of users in the specific country) league 8 (worst) to the 1337-league (the best). One season takes 50 days (real-time) and consists of 30 games. Each user has a clan, usually consisting of 5-6 players, with a maximum of 12.

[edit] Friendly League

There are also friendly leagues, where a player can join without having to worry about fitness and finance. A player may enter 5 friendly leagues at a time and each costs 10 coins, which they may purchase by credit card or by SMS. A friendly league can have a maximum of 16 clans participating and all have to pay a fee that will be split between the top 3 clans in the end. Each friendly league has its own Scribble, where people can chat and discuss the latest match or upcoming ones.

[edit] Practice Clan War (PCW)

When a manager starts the game he should try to find a PCW partner, this will help him to gain activity and training for his players. A long-term partner is referred to as a Bootcamp Partner, or BC-partner. To get the maximum effect out of the training, it is recommended to have a BC-partner with the same average player value. PCW are used test tactics and to train players.

[edit] CUP

Sponsored

A cup is a sponsored league and has prizes for those who win. Steel Gear currently sponsors these. SteelSeries Winter Cup 2006, which is open to all players, will take place this winter. It is the second cup this year, the first was held during the summer.

Nations Cup

The last cup held was the Nations Cup, where selected managers represented their own country. Only the best players from each were used in the games. This cup did not have any other prize other then pride for its country.

Final standings

(#1) – Team UK
(#2) – Team Sweden
(#3) – Team Denmark

[edit] Tournaments

The number of tournaments for a nation depend on the number of users for its country, there is minimum one tournament every week. For these tournaments managers will only be competing with other users of their country. The format is single elimination, which means one loss will result in immediate removal from the tournament.
There are 3 types of national tournaments:

  • Open tournaments: every clan can join
  • Low tournaments: only clans with national rank lower than 200 can join
  • Top tournaments: only clans with national rank above 200 can join

International Tournaments
A recent addition to CSM, they are held once every season, at the end of the season. There are 4 types of international tournaments:

  • Godlike: requires Average skill above 551
  • Pro: requires Average skill between 426 - 550
  • Skilled: requires Average skill between 301 - 425
  • Amateur: requires Average skill under 300

To join one of these tournaments you need to win a qualifier tournament which are held frequently depending on the number of managers that choose to compete. The setup of the international tournaments and of the qualifier tournaments is group play followed by single elimination. Prizes for the international tournaments include mousepads from Soft Trading, the firm behind the popular Steelpad and Icemat brands.

[edit] Tactics

The game has a wide variety of tactical approaches. This is both in playing the game (choosing waypoints for your players on the maps (de dust2 and de aztec) or to determine whether to use equipment or not. A recent evolution in tactics has exploited the use of waypoints and syncpoints (fundamental building blocks of tactics) to allow players to act dynamically depending on your opponents position on the map. It has been coined the back-up tactic, it works by making one of your players run around via waypoints over a large area, and if that player dies the sequence of waypoints/syncpoints made will change making other "waiting" players move. This tactic is believed to have been developed by the GA+ "zuck".

[edit] Players

Each player has been randomized, that is they all have a different Stamina and Talent. Some managers believe that stamina is better because it allows you to play more games without loosing to much fitness. All players have 100 % in fitness as maximum and loose a different amount according to their stamina. Talent only have effects during PCW training, were the team average is one of the biggest factors. These players have ten different attributes that decide how good they are in game against its opponents. These are:

  • Aim
Player aims better. He is more likely to get a headshot.
  • Teamplay
Player works better with their team.
  • Handling
The player handle weapons better, he get his gun in position faster.
  • Playing IQ
  • Quickness
Player's cone of view moves faster into the direction of the enemy.
  • Determination
  • Awareness
Player recognizes enemies earlier.
  • Creativity
  • Patience
  • Calmness

Every skill ranges from 0-100, but all players have a certain limit (between 70 and 100), which is the highest number that player can obtain in a given skill training. This limit can be analyzed by a medic, if one is acquired, and shown in addition to the normal skill bars.

[edit] Staff

Managers can hire staff. The manager may hire:

1 PR-Manager
1 Scout
1 Doctor
3 Trainers

The staff has a level (1-5) where 5 is the highest and 1 the lowest. The higher level your staff is, the better does he preform his/hers tasks.

PR-Manager
• Gets you better sponsor deals based on Media Rating
• Increases the selection of sponsor-/mission-alternatives
• Increases the amount of HLTV-viewers
• Generates press events (once every week, starting from the week after you hired him/her)

Scout
• Finds tryout for your clan (will find tryouts from the same country that the scout is from)
• Find as good tryouts as possible
• Find out information about the tryout

Doctor
• Can cure players faster
• Can analyse the player and find out their Limit on the different attributes

Trainer
• Teaches his skills to players that are places in the same room as himself. The players will receive better individual training.

The staff can have both sexes, but this doesn`t have anything to do with the way they preform their tasks.

[edit] Miscellaneous

Managers also get an opportunity to bet some of their financial assets on games in the Super 9 (S9) and single games.
Managers can also buy various equipment for their players so that they can play better, equipment helps by increasing the players skills above their normal limits, however a skill can not go above 100, even with equipment.
