Coulter, South Lanarkshire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coulter or Culter (both spellings are in used, pronounced "Cooter" with no "l") is a small village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is not far from Biggar.

Nearby are two notable Scottish hills, Tinto and Coulter Fell. The River Clyde is also nearby.

The village has a mill which has since been converted to a restaurant.

Culter Fell is a very enjoyable afternoons walking, you can go up the Fell Shin which is a pretty steep walk with around 500m of ascent, but with a few rest stops to enjoy the great views its not too bad, or walk further down the road and go up the path near the dam at the resevior. I was fortunate enough to get some good weather at the top and the views to Broad Law and Tinto Hill are splendid. I went down the way I went up ( Fell Shin) but I will revisit this hill and do a circular walk going up from the dam and down the Shin which should be a bit easier on the legs. On the day of my walk I considered doing Tinto again but the car park was full but Culter Fell was deserted and its only 10 minutes further up the road.
