anyone know what happened to that cot-caught isogloss map? kzz* 19:48, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
- I replaced it with the current version of Commons:Image:Cot-caught merger.png, showing individual dots, because the isoglosses were creating confusion. Many people thought the positions of the isoglosses (particularly in Northern California) were intended to be much more precise than they actually were, so I replaced it with this version that has no isoglosses. - k. this map is clearer and more informative but I liked the old one. I'm still trying to learn more about it. If I could study people who's cot & caught pronunciations are largely merged, I'd like to look into where that pronunciation typically lands on the "continuum". from my own informal research I'v heard some closer to cot, some closer to caught. Where ever the pronunciations cluster on the spectrum tho, they are merged. that is, bought and bot are homonyms. it's one of my favorite markers of regional accents. kzz* 22:08, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
