Cotton Tree
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cotton Tree is the historic symbol of Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone.
It was here in 1792 when a group of former American slaves, who had gained their freedom by fighting with the British in the American War of Independence, joined the settlement and gave it the name Freetown.
This living history is also the site for offering prayers for peace and prosperity.
Alternatively Cotton Tree is also the name given to various members of the family Bombacaceae which are often called also Silk-cotton tree.
Yet a third possibility is the plant, Hibiscus titialaceus, also known as the Cotton Tree.
