[edit] Not so
I first had this soup when I was living in Hong Kong, about 10 years before the 1997 transfer of power to China. It was a staple in dai pai dongs, and in small restaurants in the city. I'm quite convinced that it's not just an American-Canadian thing. If it's popular in America and Canada, it's likely that it was brought to Canada by the Hong Kong immigrants who came over in the '80s.
