Talk:Corey Smith (musician)

[edit] Notability
Since it has been suggested that Corey Smith is not a notable artist, here is the criterion for being notable:
* Has had a charted hit on any national music chart, in at least one large or medium-sized country.[1] * Has had a record certified gold or higher in at least one large or medium-sized country. * Has gone on an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one large or medium-sized country,[1] reported in notable and verifiable sources. * Has released two or more albums on a major label or one of the more important indie labels (i.e. an independent label with a history of more than a few years and a roster of performers, many of which are notable). * Has been featured in multiple non-trivial published works in reliable and reputable media (excludes things like school newspapers, personal blogs, etc...). * Contains at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable; note that it is often most appropriate to use redirects in place of articles on side projects, early bands and such. * Has become the most prominent representative of a notable style or the local scene of a city (or both, as in British hip hop); note that the subject must still meet all ordinary Wikipedia standards, including verifiability. * Has won a major music award, such as a Grammy, Juno or Mercury Music Award. * Has won or placed in a major music competition. * Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g. a theme for a network television show. (But if this is the only claim, it is probably more appropriate to have a mention in the main article and redirect to that page.) * Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network. * Has been the subject of a half hour or longer broadcast on a national radio network.
Corey smith has toured the southeast, has released three albums on Broken Bottle music, which may/may not be notable according to whoever decides it is notable, has been the subject of newspaper articles before, since he is a solo act has no former band members with him, he is the standard of Athens Rock and the best example of it, though he hasn't won a music award, he was able to record his first album with the money he won from a competition. In addition to this, he sold out the Coca-Cola Roxy Theater in Atlanta and is a familiar name at any college campus (and slowly becoming any high-school campus) in the southeast. One thing people need to understand is that he lives and performs in the South. People don't always keep up with the newest stuff around here, and the fact that he doesn't have a major record deal is due to the fact that most major record companies think that there is no talent in Georgia except for Atlanta (rap, of course). Look, I know I sound like I'm pitching something here, but his music is notable, maybe not by all of wikipedia's standards, but the fact that so many people are deeply affected by it, that he has a group that follows him almost anywhere he goes, and that no matter who listens to his music, they immediately fall in love with it...I call that notable. Maybe you haven't heard of him, or Athens Rock. You know why? You're too busy to listen, whatever big city you might be from. No one cares, which is why he doesn't get national attention. He's on tour now, performing in Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Alabama, Louisiana, and Florida, and the reason he's not touring anywhere else is because no one cares about his music there, except for the ones that listen to it (who actually like it). Take one of these dime-a-dozen bands on TV today. Notable, sure, but just because they seek attention and are signed to a record label which promotes them to status of bronze god. Mind you that they are young, aren't quite what you'd call "poor", and aren't trying to raise a family. So just keep this article, give a good ol' Southern boy what he deserves.

If he's recognized by a national media network like Viacom (via CMT), he should be considered notable.
