[edit] Overview

The castle is located on an island which is often called Cortex Island. It seems to get its electricity from Cortex Power, a power factory on the island. In the first Crash game, Crash's main goal was to make his way to the castle and rescue his girlfriend, Tawna. As Crash battles Cortex, the castle is on fire, although there is never given an explaination of who set it on fire, although it was most likely Crash or Dr. Nitrus Brio. In the following games, it is never seen (except in the background of some levels), implying that Cortex never moved back in there. It however appeares in the beginning of Crash Nitro Kart and as a track in Crash Team Racing. Both games are spin-offs, though and should not be counted in the storyline.

A rather strange thing is that in Crash 2, the secret warp room, containing levels 26 and 27, is also the Cortex Castle. This is proven by the fact that the Cortex Island is the only island not seen in the backround, and judging by the appearance of the warp room, it's most likely the top of the castle. Another strange thing is that this warp room is the place where Dr. N. Brio uses the laser at the end of the game. This could mean that after Cortex was defeated in the first game, the castle, then, was taken away by N. Brio, leaving Cortex with the knowledge to make a spacestation. But, this could only be true in Naughty Dog's storyline of the Crash series.
