Corona del Sol's student population consists of approximately 2900 students distributed across grades 9-12. The school colors are burnt orange and yellow, and the mascot is the Aztec warrior. Corona del Sol was established in 1976 and is a part of the Tempe Union High School District.

Corona is a closed boundary school that does not permit any outside students to attend [1]. In addition to this, Corona strictly enforces a closed-campus policy. Students attending through grades 9, 10 and 11 may not leave campus without an adult checking them out for the day. Seniors are only permitted to leave campus with a special ID which can only be obtained with a signed and notarized parent permission form.

[edit] Activities

Corona competes at the 5A-I conference level and is a member of the Central Region, which is comprised of 5 schools: Basha, Corona del Sol, Desert Vista, Marcos de Niza, and Mountain Pointe High Schools.[2]

The school has over 100 clubs and activities including an award-winning school newspaper and yearbook, various sports teams, marching band, a choir program, orchestra, and a speech and debate team. Contrary to popular belief, Corona del Sol continues to be a racially and socially accepting environment and entertains a diverse school population.

In addition to having an enormous amount of school spirit at sporting events, Corona del Sol has a large music and fine arts program, boasting four concert bands, a marching band, two concert orchestras, as well as five choir classes, and the largest percussion program in the state. Piano, Guitar, Percussion, and World Music (Steel Drums) are also offered. Other fine arts that students may take part in are Stagecraft, Ceramics, Basic Art and Design, Photography, Drawing and Painting, etc.

Corona's marching band consists of about 160 members. The marching band is known as one of the best marching bands in the state.

Corona is also known for having a consistently high number of National Merit Finalists for a public school (never less than 8 in a year). In the 2006-2007 school year Corona had 16 National Merit Scholars. Corona is among some of the largest schools in the state of Arizona and prides itself on its academic prowess, consistently positive school spirit, and one of the most effective Student Councils in Arizona.

[edit] Behavior

Corona students are typical high school students, with the same range of behavior as any other high school. Fortunately, the record for well-mannered behavior at school functions has become synonymus with all Corona students, which is just. The students dress up for the dances, listen to smooth jazz tunes and classic rock and roll, and are home by 8 o' clock. The young men and women wear their "Sunday Best" to school each day. They try their hardest to do well and study in small groups. The students make sure all their work is completed before running off to play with their neighborhood friend for the afternoon. They have been nationally reconized for being one of the most friendly schools on the southwest, by Echo Magazine.[5]
