Cornwallis Island or Michailoff's Island is an island 1 mile long, which lies 5 miles northeast of the east end of Elephant Island, in the South Shetland Islands. Island is located at 61°04′S 54°28′W. The name Cornwallis Island dates back to about 1821 and is now established in international usage.

This island is inhabitant by a German hermit called Walter Turgel who lives there alone since 1996. He gets his food and material from crossing antarctic supply vessels and from fishing. He intends to stay till his death. Further he himself declares to be the "most southern permanent resident of the world".
