Cornell Sherwoods

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Originally an a cappella subset of the Cornell University Glee Club, the Sherwoods were formed as a response to the disassociation of Cayuga's Waiters. First appearing at the Glee Club's 1956 fall concert, they immediately gained popularity on campus for their "Barbershop-Belafonte repertoire." In 1958, they followed the pattern set by Cayuga's Waiters and parted ways with the Glee Club due to the time demands of both groups. They were followed by the Glee Club Octaves and the current subset, The Hangovers.

The Sherwoods toured extensively, traveling to Hawaii, the Far East, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, and Jamaica. They commonly wore dark green jackets and ties for performances.

Unfortunately, their popularity slowly faded and the group stopped auditioning new members sometime around 1973. Amazingly, the alumni still actively perform and can be seen on campus every June at Reunions Weekend, singing in Goldwin Smith Hall after Saturday's Cornelliana Night.

Noted folksinger Harry Chapin joined the Sherwoods twice, dropping out of Cornell University shortly after each time. He never did receive his degree.

[edit] The Name

Although the original meaning of the name was connected to the forest home of Robin Hood, it came to be synonymous with their response to an impromptu invitation: "Would you like to sing?" "Sure would!" They are frequently referred to as the "Woods," much like their successors The Hangovers are called the "Hangs."

[edit] Fall Tonic

Beginning in 1959, The Sherwoods held an annual fall concert that invited other collegiate a cappella groups to perform. In the 1960-1961 school year, a spring song festival was added as well. The names Fall Tonic and Spring Tonic emerged by 1962, and the Fall Tonic's popularity resulted in packed audiences at Bailey Hall throughout the 1960s.

After the departure of the Sherwoods from the campus scene, The Hangovers resurrected Fall Tonic in 1980, a tradition that continues still today. The first guest groups at the 1980 Fall Tonic were Yale's Proof of the Pudding, University of Rochester's Yellowjackets, and Cornell's Nothing But Treble.
