The school previously occupyed a dedicated building in Union Quay, it is now divided between Moore's Hotel and Connolly Hall while the building is rebuilt. Plans for a new building were announced in October 1999, but funding from government has been slow in coming. The college was founded in 1878 and in 1993 became a school of Cork Institute of Technology. At present, the new school is currently being built and will include among its facilities over 40 new Steinway pianos.

The main programme is the Bachelor of Music degree programme. Subjects taught include performance, composition, ensemble work, keyboard skills, musicianship, music history, music technology, Irish traditional music studies and more. The school has a very large staff, many of whom teach part-time in their area of musical expertise in addition to working as full-time musicians.
