The Tou (Polynesian name, Kou in Hawaiʻi) tree (Cordia subcordata) is native from around the Indian Ocean and in the Pacific Ocean.
Large ovate leaves, orange tubular flowers, 3 to 5 cm diameter, borne in short stemmed clusters.

The wood of the tree is beautiful, soft but lasting. In ancient Hawaiʻi kou wood was used for cups, dishes and calebashes. In Tonga tou wood is a favourite for making cricket bats. One of the Tuʻi Tonga, Tamatou is supposed o have been as piece of tou wood.
