Talk:Coquitlam, British Columbia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coquitlam never had an HBC fort or trading post! There were 4 HBC sites in the Lower Mainland: Derby Reach and Fort Langley (both in Langley), Hope, and Yale. I removed the relevant sentence. --Sewing 20:24, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)

[edit] Pre-European History
Any good reasources on the Coquitlam area before Europeans moved in? I believe I have some material on it around home and will look it as soon as I can find it.
[edit] Stinky-Fish
Why are people vandaliszing this article with a stinky fish (slime) quote? Coquitlam was named for the word in the coast salish language. after the latest vandal rv, i googled coquitalm and could find no other meanings than : little pink fish. If there is another meaning quote the proof here, or it will be a vandal rv. Moreover, this is an article on the CITY coquitlam, not the WORD. Coquitlam was named for the coast salish word. therefore if someone does find an alternative meaning for the word, that should go under a seperate article: Coquitlam.- Diskadia 22:48, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I dunno. I've seen many books and heard many people say it's smelly fish slime. You have to remember Google searches the most popular webpages first because of it's Pagerank system. One thing's for sure: We'd all like to think that the city means a little pink fish rather than having teenagers drive in yelling about slime Spyco 20:21, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Chuck Strahl, author of the "Greater Vancouver Book", says that Coquitlam stems from the Halkomelem word meaning 'stinking of fish slime' and attributes the following quote to B.C.-place-name experts Helen B. and G.P.V. Akrigg. "During a great winter famine, the Coquitlam people sold themselves into slavery to the more numerous and prosperous Kwantlen nation. The new slaves, while butchering large quantities of salmon for their masters, got covered with fish slime - hence the name." Apparently, that quote is from the Akrigg's book "British Columbia Place Names", though I haven't double checked Chuck's research. --Echinda 23:31, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Not the right kind of information
"Vancouver International Airport, located on Sea Island in the City of Richmond to the west, provides most of the air access to the region. The airport (YVR) is the second busiest in Canada and one of the busiest international airports on the West Coast of North America. BC Ferries provides car and passenger ferry service from two terminals in Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay to Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and other destinations along the Inside Passage."
I don't think this is nessesary, if any airport is going to be mentioned, and i don't think any should as there are no airports within coquitlam, it should be pitt meadows. Same thing with the ferries, we don't have any!
Things that could be added is information about:
- The port mann bridge and the proposed twinning of itas well as it's impact on the reigon
- The poor bus service relevant to similar communities in Greater Vancouver
- How the millenium line has affected southern Coquitlam
- Marijuna grow ops being a problem in the reigon; Especially on Westwood Plateau
- Crime around the porier area
- Relations with other cities, (ex: the braid street bailey bridge connecting coquitlam to new westminister fiasco)
- Proposed residential development in the fraiser mills area
- Austin rebeutification efforts
- Riverview and it's history; as well as the trees there
- Colony farm
- Wildlife (eg: bears in most of coquitlam, cougars)
- Burke Mountain
- Salmon
What a list! Though this gives you an idea of what coquitlam is and issues surrounding it. We're certainly more than a city with some history and an actor teaching at the local high school! I'm sure many of you could take a few of those and turn it into a work of art we could all improve on. 207.81.213.37 08:11, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- The airport and ferry information is useful, as it explains methods for reaching the city/region. As for your other suggestions, a few of them are fairly subjective (i.e. poor bus service, problem of grow ops, affect of the millenium line). --Dogbreathcanada 17:32, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
I'm not going to lie, a few of those are probably better on the agenda at a city hall meeting, but many of those are fair game here on wiki. 207.81.213.37 23:28, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Trivia
Is it worth mentioning that from the founding of the city up until the end of August 2006 you could not drive from north Coquitlam to south Coquitlam without leaving Coquitlam, in fact I still think there are parts of northern Coquitlam that cannot be reached from Coquitlam.
I can't speak for others, but personally, I don't think so. I live in one of those areas (north of River Springs), and although the David Avenue Connector is a great convenience to the Town Centre area, it's not like we were up in the hinterland with only dogsleds to get us out. So we technically had to go through PoCo to get to the rest of Coquitlam. It's just artificial lines on a map. Greg Salter 17:39, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
