After the resignation of the only independent member, a by-election was called for November 21. The seat was important strategically for all parties because each had something at stake. The Liberals needed the seat in order to elect the new leader, Arthur Mitchell. The NDP, who seems to be set to form the next government (according to most opinion polls), would have needed the riding in hopes of winning a majority government. The Yukon Party needed to dispel negativity toward the government by proving that they could still win this riding. After the vote, Liberal leader Arthur Mitchell won the riding, increasing the number of Liberals in the legislature to two.
