[edit] Biographical Overview

Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil on March 14, 1917 of Greek parents, he moved to Greece in 1925 with his family. In 1935, he received a degree in technical design. This same year he began the study of sculpture.

In 1940, he joined the Greek Army to fight in World War II and later joined the Greek Resistance against Nazi occupation.

In 1945, he received a scholarship from the French government and moved to Paris, France.

In 1947, he began using a new personal technique to express himself: using welded copper sheets. This new technique allowed him to create a new way to express his creation in a way completely unrelated to tradition.

In Paris, he met eminent artists and intellects and collaborated -among others- with Le Corbusier, the distinguished Swiss architect. Andreou also exhibited with some of the great masters of his time, such as Pablo Picasso (1961 and 1962), Henri Matisse (1961), and Max Ernst (1962).

In 1998, he received the "Gran Prix d'Antoine Pevsner" for his sculpture work.

In 1999, the library of the town Ville-du-Bois, where Andreou resided while in France, was named in honor of Constantine Andreou.

In 2000, he was awarded the "Croix de Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur" from the French Government.

In 2001, Andreou was honored by the French Government with the title "Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" (the highest level of the Légion d'honneur).

Works by Andreou can be found in many private collections in Europe, North America and Asia.
