Connection Addiction

Connection Addiction,’ is the dependence of individuals to connect to information or devices habitually and unconsciously. This reliance is demonstrated by abnormal behaviour when withdrawn from the enabling technologies.

Connection Addiction theory is a wide and encompassing topic of contemporay behaviour of individuals to technology and its connective attributes. It is an umbrella term for the accumulation of Computer and Internet Addiction, Work and Email addiction, Cell Phone and News addiction as well as Television, PDA, Gaming and Personal Audio Player addiction. These are all issues which are under the scope of Connection Addiction theory.

A prevalent example of Connection Addiction is employees constantly checking their blackberry for email on weekends and during non work hours. Other examples include listening to an ipod in public to avoid social interaction or watching television excessively. There are many examples that fall under Connection Addiction and the theory exists to link and simplify developing technological behaviours.

The general trend of Connection Addiction behavior follows five distinct steps.

I. The individual first experiences the connection

II. The individual recollects the connection and chooses to reconnect

III. The individual continues to access connection frequently

IV. The individual begins to favor ‘Connection’ activities over traditional behavior

V. Where there would seem to be a choice of behaviour to a normal person, the Connection Dependent individual will choose to ‘connect’ every time.
