Route 66 in Connecticut begins in Meriden as the extension of Interstate 691, which officially ends at its interchange with Interstate 91. This freeway portion runs for about 1.5 miles into the town of Middlefield. Route 66 becomes a surface road and is typically 2 lanes wide (4 lanes in Middlefield, Middletown, and Portland) and runs through the towns of Middletown, Portland, East Hampton, Marlborough, Hebron, Columbia, and Windham. Route 66 has a junction with U.S. Route 6 in Columbia where US 6 becomes a freeway. In this area, Route 66 serves as an alternate non-freeway route to US 6 that passes through the Windham town center and Eastern Connecticut State University. Route 66 ends in Windham where the freeway segment of US 6 ends. The road continues northeastward as US 6.
Route 17 overlaps with Route 66 from Middletown to Portland as they cross the Connecticut River on the Arrigoni Bridge. There is also an interchange with the Route 2 freeway in the town of Marlborough. Route 66 is 38.38 miles in length.
Until the late 1960's, Route 66 was an Alternate US 6.
