Route 53 is a state highway from Norwalk to Danbury. It begins at U.S. Route 1 in Norwalk and travels through the towns of Norwalk (3.6 miles), Wilton (2.3 miles), Weston (5.8 miles), Redding (5.7 miles), Bethel (3.3 miles), and Danbury (2.8 miles). Route 53 ends in downtown Danbury at the junction between Routes 37, 39, and Interstate 84. A 2.0 mile section in Redding is a designated scenic road. Most of the route has been made redundant by U.S. Route 7, except for the last section from Bethel to Danbury, which is part of a direct route (Route 58) from the Bridgeport area to Danbury.
