Route 2A is an expressway alternate route of Route 2 that bypasses the downtown area of Norwich. Route 2A begins at the junction of I-395 and Route 2/Route 32 in Norwich. Route 2A travels along I-395 for 3.7 miles before separating as its own 2-lane freeway. This independent freeway portion of Route 2A runs for about 3.4 miles through the towns of Montville and Preston. The Mohegan Sun casino has an exit on the Route 2A freeway. Route 2A crosses the Thames River on the Mohegan-Pequot Bridge. After the river crossing, Route 2A becomes a surface road for another 2.9 miles ending at Route 2 in Preston. The total length of Route 2A is 9.91 miles.
