Conk fruiting body

Conk. common name for the fruiting body of Fomitopsis pinicola a Polypore fungi. The conk is a woody, pileate fruiting body with pores on its underside. The pores are lined with basidia (basidiospore producing structures characteristic of the phylum Basidiomycota). The fruit in perennial with a new layer of pores produced each year on the bottom of the old pores. This species is abundant in British columbia and causes brown rot in softwood.
