Conflicting Emotions is a 1983 album by New Zealand New Wave band Split Enz. Considered by some to be their poorest release, the band themselves at the time were more than happy with the result & refused to make any changes that the record company requested. A&M, their American record company were even less happy as the album only seemed to have 1 marketable single, the ballad Message to My Girl -- though in hindsight, "The Devil You Know," one of Neil Finn's most respected Enz songs, could have been a contender.
During this time Tim Finn had already released the successful solo album Escapade, & was performing the odd concert to promote the album during the recording of Conflicting Emotions. Due to Tim's lesser involvement, most of the songs on the album are by Neil Finn except four.
The album was a commercial failure with the single Message to My Girl only just reaching the top 30 on the Australian charts. The other single Strait Old Line fared even worse, and tension was mounting. Some new blood was needed it seemed, and before the Conflicting Emotions tour they advertised for a new drummer. Paul Hester answered the call, & joined the band in time to tour, and feature in the Message to My Girl video clip.
While the album may have been a failure, the title was certainly appropriate. There was rumoured resentment over Tim Finn's successful solo career taking off which caused some conflict. Also to add to Tim Finn insisted on bringing in drummer Ricki Fataar to sessions and using a drum machine on most other tracks (Noel Crombie is credited as drummer/percussionist on the album liner, but he played very little drums on this album)
