[edit] Introduction

ConferenceXP is an open source platform for integrating classroom & personal technology for the purposes of distance education. It promises to be a development platform that encourages integration of ink-based technologies (Tablet PCs, handheld systems etc.) with established Learning Management Systems (LMSs) to provide a seamless, media-rich experience.[1]

[edit] Higher Education Involvement

The following Universities in the United States are actively researching, developing or participating in this open source initiative:[2]

  • Brown University
  • Cornell University
  • University of California at Berkeley
  • University of Washington
  • University of California at Santa Cruz

There are other institutions which are investing resources in development on this platform:

  • University of Michigan (School of Public Health)
  • MERIT [3]

[edit] The Platform

ConferenceXP is a platform supporting applications and services for low-latency conferencing applications. A complete description of the architecture and services available is available through the ConferenceXP Research Website.

Given the nature of the data-rates involved, the platform is optimised to use Multicast networks, generally found in institutions of higher education, corporations and research institutions other data intensive environments. However, reflector services accommodate Unicast Networks.

One of the most notable applications are the ConferenceXP Presenter developed by a team of researchers at University of Washington, lead by Richard Anderson.[4]
