Blocking

Hi there, just came over a user talk page I could not edit because it is blocked. I could not quite see it from your notes, could you please explain what the user did that was disruptive and why even his talk page had to be blocked? Thank you. Añoranza 14:56, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

I rudely neglected to thank you for you help with Mathematics Formulae, so thanks once again. About archiving one's talk page, I've seen one user erasing his talk page and simply providing a link to the old version (an oldid, before the erasing) - is this such a good idea? Of course, Wikipedia is not running out of space, but I get the feeling there might be some guideline or part of the licence which discourages this. Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 18:07, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks again

Thanks, Commander ... you should sleep every now and then :-) Sandy 12:27, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the dab info!

You are so right, I was confused! Thanks for clarifying the "(disambiguation) in the title issue" for me. In the case of something like Rap, which is the disambiguation page, of what use is the page titled Rap (disambiguation) that just redirects to Rap? Is that used for something? Does it get "moved" to Rap and then deleted, or is it just to be left as a redirect? Dreadlocke 03:22, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

I think I just answered my own question, the (disambiguation) title page is for linking in things like Wikipedia:Links_to_(disambiguation)_pages so there's no doubt that it's a disambig page, then it just redirects to the actual disambig page that's not titled disambiguation. Ok. I think I have it now.  :) Dreadlocke 03:25, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Admin assistance

A very minor request: Music Genre is, as expected, a redirect to Music genre; however, for some inscrutable reason, Talk:Music genre is a redirect to Talk:Music Genre. I can't move the talk page due to past edit history; can you please move it so that the Talk page goes with the corresponding article? Thanks! --Russ Blau (talk) 13:27, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

About the {helpme}

I didn't place the helpme you removed from my talkpage back there yesterday, that was another user who decided to unblank the talkpage and leave "you have new messages" for the IP even though I told him that my IP can change next time the router is reset. Is it really so that it's vandalism to remove the comments? They stay in history, right? Sorry for the inconvenience. 85.70.5.66 06:14, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Category:Reviewed protected edit requests

I was trying to make it consistant with category:requests for unblock, I actually created a new template for that same reason, you might want to also ckeck the history tab and the talkpage of {{editprotected}} to find out a bit more background information. Myrtone

Help desk (VFAQ)

Nice work, that was exactly what was needed in my opinion!

I still feel that the intro bit on the RD and HD pages is too long: if I were a new user, I wouldn't bother reading through the long list of guidelines and rules at the top of the page, to post a question. The question is, do you think we can streamline it without loosing the gist of what they need to know?

Again, great work!

Dennis Allen

Hi Commander Keane. Thanks for your message concerning the deletion of the article, Dennis Allen. Whilst in my opinion this character is indeed noteworthy, I don't have any references to hand at present, in particular several books concerning the topic. One good reference in particular is a biography on his mother, The Matriarch: The Kathy Pettingill Story. As I'm moving house at present, most of my reference material is packed away. I'll have to chase this one up at the other end of my travels and leave it be for now unfortunately. I recently deleted my watchlist (which was growing fast and had reached almost 2000 articles), and missed this deletion. Thanks for your vigilance.. -- Longhair 23:57, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Ah yes, I see the issue now. Thanks for your references. It appears the admin who deleted the page did so on the basis the prod notice wasn't removed and perhaps some of the information wasn't cited. I guess it's a case for deletion review. -- Longhair 09:09, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
I've created a listing at WP:DRV if you wish to have some input. I'd like to see the deletion overturned. Again, thanks for your eyes on the issue. -- Longhair 09:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
The article has been restored. Great referencing by the way. I try to reference where I can these days. That was one of my earlier attempts at an article :) -- Longhair 09:33, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
About Prod notices: Looks like you added the citations but left the prod notice, and the 5-day deadline was just about to expire. Once a prod notice is placed on an article the deletion happens automatically, regardless of citations added, or changes to the article. There is no review. Anyone may remove a prod notice at any time for any reason (or none at all), so normally you want to do that at the same time you add citations (or even if you're planning to). Fan-1967 13:14, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Realistically, I think often prods get so backed up that admins may not be very meticulous in reviewing them, going by the assumption that if nobody bothered to remove the prod notice, it's probably not worth keeping. The other reason they may not be that careful is that, as in this case, if anyone complains, restoration of the article is automatic, so no harm done. Fan-1967 13:34, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your Comment!

Indeed {{helpme}} should be used for building the encyclopedia. I would like to think however, that clarifying the issue I had requested help for can only benefit me in future edits. Nonetheless, I appreciate and will take into account your concern from now on :)

seeking guidance on editing fonts in Wikipedia

Hi! I'm not sure you are the most appropriate person to ask, but I found you via a relevant link, so: I have noticed on the page of "Tibetan language" in Wikipedia that the Tibetan script does not stack up properly. I have no trouble doing this with various editors (including Word) on either a Mac or Windows platform, but, at least in Windows, one has to use a special Tibetan Unicode font such as "Tibetan Machine Uni" so that the necessary Open Type information is available. It seems that the font used on the Wikipedia page is simply some generic Unicode font such as Arial Unicode MS etc. which does indeed contain the Tibetan letters, but does not know how to assemble them (stack them) into a legible Tibetan word. I also noticed that in the article on Pali language, my office XP system with IE browser was unable to correctly show the fonts there no matter what font I tried to use via the View menu (although if the same material was copied into a Word document, there was no problem), whereas on my XP system at home with the Firefox browser, there was no problem on the same Wikipedia page.

Warsaw Radio Mast photos

Pictures of this building are extremely rare. Extremely. There are people struggling over the net and libraries to find them, including me. There are discussions about this, because it's not a small thing for world heritage and Guinness. It's the world's tallest structure, enfulged in the wave of SSSR mistery. My friend managed to find those images from unknown source, which is a great effort. So, what should I do to make those photos legal on wikipedia? Why there isn't any tag for unknown photos? Not all photos have a known history. I could've uploaded it cropped with notation it's my photo, but I was sincere. Thank you for your answer.

Possible sock puppet

There is a vandal who has recently been adding very inappropriate images to the article 2006 redefinition of planet. It may be deeper than ordinary vandalism, however, because it seems that the same person is creating numerous accounts and using each one once to recreate the image each time it is deleted. Starting up a page

Seeing that you are an administrator on Wikipedia, I was just wondering if you could give me the appropriate instructions on how to set up a page on Wikipedia. I seem to have trouble locating the pages I have set up when I type to title of my page into the Wikipedia "search" URL. Thanks. Canadia

Thanks for your reply. However, with all due respect, I don't think you understand my problem. I have created two pages Military History of Canada during WWI and List of Christian Missionaries. Yet when you put in the title of these two pages into the Wikipedia "Search Engine," it doesn't give you the page I have created. On the other hand, if you type in "Canada" into the search engine, you get a page describing all the things about Canada ([1]) If you could take a look at these two pages and see what's wrong, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Canadia
Okay thanks a whole bunch. Just one more thing: I created the "Military History of Canada during WWI" page on June 15th. Is it suppose to take this long to show up? I know some guys whose articles have shown up just 2 days after their creation. Is there something wrong that I am doing when I make an article? Please reply. Thanks Canadia

Help with stub tagging on amputation article?

I was referred to you by User:SandyGeorgia who said that you were a great help when she had trouble with vandalism on the Tourette syndrome page. One of the pages that I am watching is the amputation page, as it relates to some of my professional interests. In the past two weeks, the page has been tagged three times as a stub [2]. Normally, this would be a quite reasonable tag in wikipedia (and not something likely to be picked up by bots), and I wouldn't be contacting an admin about it, but in this case there are a number of things that make it seem like vandalism or a joke in poor taste.

  1. The article is not a stub. It is long enough (although it could still be expanded) that it is no longer editable by a novice. It currently includes 7 sections, and although it could use some referencing hits the major points.
  2. Stub when referrring to amputations makes for a very poor-taste joke. Indeed, the first editor who tagged the article with "stub" included "huhuhuhu" as his edit comment.
  3. All three users who have tagged the article are IPs. The first one has only this edit in his or her history. Obviously, this are at best circumstantial details, but I am only using them to add to the above. Especially in the case of the first IP edit.

Again, if the article were a stub, or in the absence of such comments, I wouldn't be contacting you. At this point, my question is, does the 3RR apply to vandalism of this sort? Is there any way to make certain that this article does not get tagged with an inappropriate stub notice? I assume bots aren't smart enough to remove stub tags from specific pages? I have added a polite notice {{subst:test0}} on the user page for User:137.73.22.142. In his or her case, the IP has at least been used several times, so perhaps there will be some response. Please feel free to reply on my talk page if you have any other suggestions. Edhubbard 20:32, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with the amputation page, and for the advice about the 3RR. I will continue to revert, and remind users that this might be considered vandalism. The last revert, I also invited the user to discuss this on the talk page, in case there is something that I've missed, but if people continue to tag the article with no explanation, I might ask for semi-protection. It sure doesn't seem bad enough to warrant it yet... It's not the elephant article, after all! Edhubbard 21:13, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

A question

Hi again! Thanks for helping out Edhubbard (above). I have a question: I'm past the days of multiple helpme templates, but instruction creep still makes it hard to understand some things on Wiki. I haven't been able to find this answer anywhere.

In spite of a prior mediation (where I ceded to this editor, hoping a show of good faith would help: it didn't), and two RfCs resulting in multiple editors (including admins) telling him his interpretation of BLP is incorrect, another editor has escalated from inappropriate deletions of well-sourced material to what I believe are personal attacks. I have offered him the opportunity to apologize and retract, which he hasn't done. In the discussion, he has added further attacks. There has been a pattern of escalation over two months now, and my concern is that he refuses to listen to consensus or to back down. My question is, am I supposed to leave template npa2 on his page, or is that an admin function only? I can't find any instructions anywhere which explain adequately the use of the template. (I'm not asking you to leave a warning: I'm still hoping he'll back down and de-escalate. I'm trying to find out if the next step is for me to leave the template, or to ask an admin to leave one, or if my discussion on his talk page is sufficient for now.) Thanks for any help you can give, Sandy 16:55, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Update: as he refuses to discuss and back off (calls it a "debate"), I now do want to add a warning template, and need to know if I should add that, or if an admin needs to add it. Thanks, Sandy 17:59, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Please delete a page

Sorry to bug you with this... Could you please delete the blank page User:RussBlau/dpl2.js? I can't tag it for speedy deletion because ".js" pages aren't parsed for wiki-syntax, apparently. --Russ Blau (talk) 17:34, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Housekeeping

A bit of old news here (all the way back to April), but since you're an admin I'll mention it. You posted to User talk:Ziggles Metropolitan recommending the {{Citecheck}} template for articles that needed citations. Actually that recommendation ought to be {{Citations missing}}. {{Citecheck}} is specialized for misuse of citations, such as quotations taken out of context. I've had to change templates on a lot of articles that were using the wrong template. Please spread the word about that difference. Cheers, Durova 04:20, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Arsenal images

Hi. I'm looking through all the Arsenal player articles, and they've all recently had the official profile photos uploaded to them. For example take Gilberto Silva, the photo at the top is from http://www.arsenal.com/player.asp?thisNav=first+team&plid=60094&clid=4421&cpid=703

A while ago in my talk you said that this kind of image use wasn't allowed - has this changed? I would love the Gilberto article to be allowed the official Arsenal.com profile pic, but I suspect it is illegal.

Please advise - thanks. -GilbertoSilvaFan 04:16, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Misery (film)

As far as the db-empty tag I placed on this article is concerned, I did look at the previous edits, and I still felt the tag was justified. All of the movie information is already present in the main Misery article, and the editor gave no indication that he was splitting it off, or why. Instead, he created an infobox, then deleted it. As far as I knew, he would not be completing the article, nor was the article necessary. As I say, I felt the tag was justified. ---Charles 05:59, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Yeah there was a bit of a misunderstanding on my part there. I saw the attempt at an infobox, and fixed it (it was a very tricky problem, where a borken wikilink broke the entire template). Filling out an infobox takes a bit of time and I was disappointed that it was tagged for deletion. I didn't realise that the film is already covered at Misery, but I think the extra information in the infobox not presented in Misery is useful, and that the film should have its own article. But maybe that is something to discuss.--Commander Keane 06:36, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
I certainly have no objection to the film having its own article---in fact, I was quite surprised to find it hadn't one already. When I saw the title on the new articles page, though, I assumed this was either a joke article (which I have seen in the past) or someone creating a new article without checking to make sure it did not already exist (an example of which, again involving a film, I saw just the other day). In a sense, the latter is the case. There should probably be some discussion on the talk page for the main Misery article, and a suggestion that the film content be split off into a separate article. I think that would be the best course of action. Thanks for your response and your vigilance. ---Charles 06:42, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
OK I kicked off a discussion at Talk:Misery. Thanks for your help :-) --Commander Keane 06:59, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
It's my pleasure (for the most part). I will contribute to that discussion. ---Charles 20:23, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Russell Peters edits of 65.49.251.20

Hi Commander Keane, I'd just like to seek some advice on a constant pain of an editor; this person (65.49.251.20) keeps reverting the edit or Russell Peters' middle name, which is Dominic (and I also cited a source), and is constantly incivil in his edit summaries, eg (geek - his name as a performer is Russell Peters), or (HE'S NOT PUNJABI DUMBASSES). I'm trying my best to keep cool, and I thought I could've asked you, as an admin of you could warn/block him (as he has not got enough warnings for WP:AIV, I think), or possibly do something to resolve this? How Should I Handle This?

If you examine the contribs from "Taekowndodogoof (Talk | contribs)" you will find that he replaced the image that I uploaded with itself more than once (the actual image published on my website is http://dwightmccann.com/Images/AnaGabriel10192006/AnaGabriel079.JPG) and has made false claims about "Fair Use" and has neither attributed the image nor provided any reference ... he couldn't, of course, because he is fabricating his explanation. This will likely preclude my contributions to the Public Domain of other the PhotoArt which contains its own attribution material. Dwightmccann 01:00, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Attribution of Images

I read the image usage policy quickly and did not see any specifics about attribution in captions. Since it is clearly trivial for someone to replace my images with copies of themselves but without appropriate attribution metadata as was the case with Ana Gabriel, I find the suggestion that attribution should not accompany images in articles unresponsive. In all works, including encyclopedias, in which images are used, photocredit exists ... it is like any art: we do not generally see paintings or sculpture shown anonymously. However, I can see there is considerable stress in this area, which explains why there are so few quality images of Performing Artists available here. My intentions with regard to Wikipedia were to share high quality images of major artists for public use, but not without acknowledgement. This is clearly not an appropriate medium and my contributions were ill considered. I will "Be Bold" via a Google sitemap to my images instead. I apologize for taking up your time. That was months ago! LOL :D Yeah, I was still a noob then. I've figured it out by now. Reported some cut & pase holding pens too. Anyway, thanks for fixin' it. Even I've already forgotten about that edit. :D Btw, although admittedly, there's yet an article named GCC, shouldn't it be GCC (disambiguation) instead of just GCC? (I mean, wouldn't having GCC for disambig instead of GCC (disambiguation) be hogging a space that someone could put an article about GCC into?)

you might want to archive your talk page, it's kind of long. :) Please respond on my talk page (the red link in my signature). Cheers! :)Randfan!! 16:46, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Pedra Branca

I notice that you deleted this page and move Pedra Branca (disambiguation) there as a "malplaced disambiguation page". Well, the redirect on Pedra Branca was the remnant of a move made by a user without discussion; he moved the original Pedra Branca page to Pedra Branca, Singapore. Then someone changed the redirect to point to the disambiguation page. There is a discussion on Talk:Pedra Branca, Singapore to move it back to Pedra Branca. Ideas for Vote Templates

Hello Commander!

Currently, on Meta, people use templates that users place when voting on whatnot to declare their vote. I have created similar "templates" on one of my user pages, but currently these are not mainstream templates (then again they aren't even templates) because I wanted a few Admins to approve them for use on Votes (such as RfAs and other votes). Please see This page for more info.

Hi Weasel! I have some ideas for you... Hope that helps a bit :-) --Commander Keane 03:59, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes, indeed it does! I really appreciate the courtesy and depth of attention that I have received from everyone, and your kind tones. I just wanted to let you know, because I have been away for some time, that I have both received your helpful and specific answers to my questions and that I am thankful for them. Keep up the good work! WeaselADAPT 23:58, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Bad Idea?

I could use an assist (maybe two). I have a pet peeve, and thought I'd come up with a good concept for making chides to editors who leave incomplete documentation trails by creating sort of a wet diaper award. It seems to be drawing some adverse reactions, and even before I'd spammed a request to some others like this for brainstorming on how to shorten same and evolve it, as I'm not happy with it either. Subsequently, it's already drawn fire (here) before I could ask in help and get suggestions. Can you take a look and comment here. There has to be some way to let people know 'shallow edit actions' that reflect poorly on our pages need a talk note justification, no exceptions, thankyou. Much appreciated // FrankB 22:55, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
