David Gilmour was photographed at Radio City Music Hall on April 4, 2006, by photographer and filmmaker Mark Estabrook, during Gilmour's first public U.S. tour performance to promote his "On an Island" CD. Copyrighted and published here with permission of Mark Estabrook.

"All I had at the time was a little Sony Cybershot pocket camera with 6-megapixel resolution, which I purchased for my daughter hours earlier. I didn't even get a chance to read the owner's manual. It fit conveniently in my shirt pocket, and was smaller than many cell phones," Estabrook said.

Security searched fans as they streamed into the music hall, primarily looking for video and audio recording devices to prevent bootlegging. There was a sea of arms holding up cell phones, snapping pictures that ended up all over the internet within hours.

"I took about 70-80 shots that night, of which, only about 4-5 turned out due to lighting and motion blur. I think I stretched the limitation of that camera and Photoshop." Most of the people who have seen the shots from the concert do not believe Estabrook used such a small, amateur camera to get his shots.

This and other shots from the same performance are available as wallpapers in various screen resolutions at http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/general/dgme.html for free download. Those wallpapers are for personal use only and may not be used for commerical purposes or re-published in any manner without the express written consent of Mark Estabrook.

Estabrook said he hopes young students of photography will be encouraged to maximize whatever camera they can afford, since photography is not about expensive equipment. (But he still looks forward to the day when he can shoot David with his Nikon D2X).
