Comte Decaen

Charles Mathieu Isidore Decaen, French general, was born in 1769 in Caen and died in 1832. He became Governor General of Pondicherry.

He was charged in 1802 to go the French establishments in India, as well as deployed in that difficult mission and he defended 8 years the Islands of France and Bourbon against all the efforts of the British.

Upon his return he was put to the head of the army of Catalonia. He there formed the Catalan guides and gained the regard. After trying in vain, at the beginning of 1814, to push back the British of Bordeaux, he was recognized by Louis XVIII. He was appointed as governor of the 11th military division (Bordeaux), he made an effort, but without success, to maintain there the authority royal after the unloading of Napoleon I; He was recalled to the activity by Louis-Philippe I in 1830. Decaen had been made Count under the Empire after which two years later he died.
