Compuspec Industries Ltd was established in 1983 and is a private New Zealand based company specialising in remote distributed intelligence.

The company was founded to apply new technology solutions to make life easier for consumers. i.e. Lifestyle Innovation. Typically this involves breaking away from traditional centralised control to distributed embedded intelligence. Distributed intelligence allows services to grow organically with investment required only as market demand grows rather than the traditional model of inflexible expensive centralised control. It also typically places control in the hands of the user, rather than a third party.

The first mass application of this has been in the Telecommunications field. Traditionally a carrier has had to invest massive expense in infrastructure with exchange switching equipment. However in 1992 Compuspec developed the Worlds' first line powered dialler or Network Access Device which enabled alternate carriers to roll out customer service in a highly flexible and cost effective manner. These devices enabled alternate telecommunications carriers to compete on a more equal footing with incumbent carriers in newly deregulated telephone markets and rapidly accelerated the telecommunications deregulation process. It put the consumer in control.

Initially these “Smart Socket” had to be installed by qualified technicians, but efforts to make them smaller, smarter and seemingly more simple resulted in them being able to be mailed out to the carrier's new customers, therefore dramatically reducing the cost of connection. When first plugged in they would automatically self configure based upon the customers geographic areas and what services they had subscribed for.

If you have a Zippy dialler fitted to your phone line, then for every call you make to make it will be making a decision on how best to route the call based upon what services you have subscribed to from your carrier. In some markets it may be reporting to a central management centre (DMP) to enable the carrier to monitor the quality of service you are receiving and to change the services you enjoy, based upon their current service offerings. Your called numbers are not recorded or reported. If you move location the dialler will automatically reconfigure itself based upon your new geographic area and your selected services. Effectively the intelligence in the traditional telephone exchange has been moved to the end of your phone line.

Compuspec have also developed enhanced versions of this dialler technology that support voice prompts for customer specific feature selection, soft call blocking (calls to certain destinations are automatically limited in duration or prevented), alternate network access MAD (multiple access dialler) (where network reliability requires fall-back to alternative networks) and anti-fraud detection and prevention. Typically used in payphones, PAD (payphone anti-fraud) diallers detect and prevent up to 12 different types of phone fraud. New diallers also allow some call destinations to be routed via low cost VoIP carriers.

Compuspec's ultra low powered technology ultimately resulted in the development of intelligent phone sockets which enable proactive line quality measurements, ADSL quality prediction and automatic fault location to occur thereby enhancing customer service and massively reducing network maintenance costs.
