Compound is a cheap chocolate replacement made from a combination of cocoa, vegetable fat, and sweeteners. Often used in lower grade candy bars like the Idaho Spud, compound is designed to simulate enrobed chocolate on a product without the candy manufacturer having to go to the expense of using cocoa butter instead of the far cheaper vegetable fats.
