The composition of a material refers to the proportion and combination of elements or components to form a substance.

The composition of a substance can refer to the proportion that other elements or components or combined to form the substance. In chemistry this can refer to the chemical composition of the substance while in geography and metalurgy it can refer to the crystal structure of the substance.
