[edit] History
[edit] Compo
Compo was founded in the post-war era in a program of economic development undertaken by Tito.
[edit] 1990s
The state-owned factory contributed substantially to the local economy, until the 1990s, when economic crisis lead to the partial closure of the plant. Following the overthrow of the former president Slobodan Milošević, and the subsequent establishment of a Democratic government, the factory was effectively shut down, as unpaid electricity bills and lack of demand prevented the company from restarting production.
[edit] Breza Svilajnac
In 2005, the company was acquired by Breza Svilajnac, a recently founded furniture manufacturor that took over Compo's market in the late 1990s and the 2000-2005 period. Breza owns another furniture manufactory on the outskirts of Svilajnac.

In addition to the factory, Compo owned a department store and furniture showroom in Svilajnac, as well as several smaller locales in the surrounding towns.
[edit] Scandals
Compo has been the subject of a scandal, as one of the last directors of Compo smuggled several machines into Russia, during the 1990s. Their value is estimated to be around $5 million. The director fled the country, and settled in Russia.
