Voice over IP (VoIP) software is used to conduct telephone-like voice conversations across the internet. VOIP phone service is often cheaper than traditional phone service, and is becoming more popular for both business and personal calls.

As a public medium, in theory calls made across the Internet can be listened into by users of the computers which relay them, without legal authority. So certain packages use encryption (either rigorously or to a less robust degree) to improve the privacy of the discussion.

 Based on SRTP, which uses 256-bit AES together with a 3,000-bit key exchange system and voice based verification to prevent man in the middle attacks.
