Community of the Transfiguration
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miss Eva Lee Matthews and Miss Beatrice Henderson founded this Anglican relgious community of women in 1898. At that time, Christians of all persuasions were beginning to rediscover the neglected mystery of the Transfiguration, a feast of Jesus Christ rarely celebrated until the end of the 19th century. In fact, there is no record of any medieval church or religious congregation being dedicated to the Transfiguration until about the time of the Oxford Movement in the 1830s.
The foundresses believed that there was a need for a group of women dedicated to the mystery of the Transfiguration. The Mother House, which is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, is the centre of ministries which include retreat work, a school, a nursing home and a recreation centre.
The Sisters live under the evangelical councils of poverty, chastity and obedience, and celebrate the round of Divine Office and Daily Mass.
The Sisters are an international community with houses in California and the Caribbean, where the Sisters work to enable the poor.
The motto of the Sisters is "Benignitas, Simplicitas and Hilaritas" Latin for "Kindness, Simplicity and Joy."
