Communist Workers Organisation (UK)

The Communist Workers Organisation (CWO) is a small British left communist party and a section of the International Bureau for the Revolutionary Party. Based in Sheffield, it publishes a quarterly magazine, Revolutionary Perspectives and distributes the international Aurora newsletter.

The group was founded in the mid-1970s with the union of Workers Voice, based in Liverpool, and Revolutionary Perspectives, a Scottish group which had previously been active in Solidarity. Both groups had considered joining the International Communist Current, but had disagreements on several positions, most notably the tendency of the rate of profit to fall and the nature of the October Revolution.

Workers Voice left the CWO shortly after it was founded, having failed to win the fused organisation to their position that the October Revolution had not been a genuine proletarian revolution. By 1976, the remainder of the CWO was split, a majority arguing that it was the only proletarian organisation in the world. The minority left to join World Revolution.
