Commodore is the lowest commissioned Starfleet flag officer rank in the Star Trek fictional universe. It exists in the franchise's 22nd and 23rd centuries; its existence in the 24th century is uncertain. This rank is analogous to the actual military rank of commodore – below admiral (usually rear admiral) and above fleet captain or the line officer rank of captain – in some navies.
In Star Trek: Enterprise, Maxwell Forrest appears as a commodore during a flashback in the episode "First Flight", establishing that the rank exists in Starfleet as early as the mid 2150s.
"Commodore" is often mentioned in Star Trek: The Original Series. During the series, a total of six characters appear on camera as Starfleet commodores:
- Commodore Barstow – "The Alternative Factor"
- Commodore Matthew Decker – "The Doomsday Machine"
- Commodore Jose Mendez – "The Menagerie"
- Commodore George Stocker – "The Deadly Years"
- Commodore Stone – "Court Martial"
- Commodore Robert Wesley – "The Ultimate Computer"
The third season of the TOS has no commodores and a Starfleet commodore is not seen again – and then only briefly – until the Federation Council scene in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. "Commodore Probert" is mentioned in communications chatter audible during the Epsilon 9 establishing shots in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Later Star Trek television series do not have any commodores seen or discussed on camera. Admiral Gregory Quinn's offer to promote Captain Jean-Luc Picard "to admiral" may indicate that the rank of commodore does not exist in the late 24th century – although the dialogue may also indicate Quinn's desire for Picard to skip the grade. (TNG: "Coming of Age")
The FASA role-playing game manual Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual (which is not canon) indicates that commodore may exist during the TNG timeframe, conjecturing a five-pip collar insignia.[1] The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Journal indicates that the rank of commodore may be denoted as a single rank pip insignia, enclosed within a gold box worn on both sides of the uniform collar.[2] However, The Star Trek Encyclopedia contradicts this by stating that one boxed pip indicates an admiral (possibly a rear admiral (lower half)).
