Committee for Public Safety
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Committee for Public Safety was a revolutionary organization that existed throughout the latter part of the period of the French Revolution known as the reign of terror. It housed nine members, who under the auspices of Georges Jacques Danton was given ultimate power. It was their decisions led by the notable Robespierre, and Billaud, that helped in the "witch hunt" that was the reign of terror. It was through this committee that heightened factionalism occurred, and many innocent citizens were sent either to the revolutionary tribunal or directly to the guillotine.
