Commander-in-Chief Fleet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Commander-in-Chief Fleet (CINCFLEET) is the senior admiral responsible for the preparation and operation of the ships, submarines and aircraft of the British Royal Navy. The CINCFLEET and his staff are based at Northwood Headquarters.
The current CINCFLEET is Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent (appointed 2005).
The post of CINCFLEET resulted from the merger of the Western Fleet and the Eastern / Far East Fleet in 1971, resulting in a single fleet command.
The Commander-in-Chief is assisted by the Deputy Commander-in-Chief Fleet, currently Vice-Admiral T P McClement, as well as the Chief of Staff (Warfare), Chief of Staff (Support), Chief of Staff (Capability) (currently Rear-Admiral P.L. Wilcocks), Commander (Operations), and Command Secretary.
The post has also come with various NATO appointments since its creation, including:
- Commander in Chief Channel (until 1994)
- Commander in Chief East Atlantic (1994–2004).
Currently CINCFLEET has the NATO post of Commander Allied Maritime Component Command, Northwood. This post is in command of all maritime forces that are part of NATO Joint Force Command Brunssum.
