Comedy at Club 54

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Comedy at Club 54 is a Canadian television program hosted by Ben Guyatt. The show has been in production since the early 1990s and is now playing syndicated re-runs on the Canadian Comedy Network. The show takes place in Burlington, Ontario at Club 54 (a popular nightclub). The performances still happen weekly, although a new performance rarely makes its way onto the air.

The show usually begins with a zoom-in to host Ben Guyatt, who then reads the "Joke of the Day", which is a daily joke sent in from program viewers across North America. Typically, he will then throw the joke card behind him and say to the audience "Welcome to Comedy at Club 54!!" This is followed by the opening sequence, audience applause, and the shows theme song, played by an in house band.

Ben Guyatt will then introduce the comedians. Club 54 typically attracts big name comedians in the comedy circuit, although house-hold names such as Tim Allen or Jim Carrey do not appear on the program. The performances range from awkward, with little audience interaction, to very very entertaining, with the performer running into the audience and spraying silly string at the audience and other such pranks. Every show features two comedians, with a 12 minute televised spot, although the live performances are much longer and are edited for time reasons.

The show closes with Ben Guyatt once again on stage, calling up the comedians for a final bow. At this point Guyatt will usually say "..And remember, we share the planet with the animals, so please, I beg ya, treat 'em with respect" followed by "Goodnight mom, I love ya!"
