Combat-oriented computer role-playing game
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Combat-oriented RPGs are computer games of a specific sub-genre of hack and slash action role-playing games as exemplified by Diablo; in fact many games of this genre are described as diablo clones. They are generally home computer games rather than console, as they commonly employ a mouse point-and-click control system.
Key features include:
- Features commonly associated with RPGs (stats, items etc)
- Player control of a single character (although often in a multiplayer team)
- In-game situations being resolved by combat rather than puzzle-solving or dialogue
- Almost continuous combat action
- Plot and dialogue being kept to a minimum
This genre can be considered a cross-over between the RPG and fighting game genres.
Examples include:
- Champions of Norrath
- Champions: Return to Arms
- Diablo
- Diablo: Hellfire
- Diablo II
- Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
- Divine Divinity
- Dungeon Siege
- Dungeon Siege II
- Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony
- Freedroid RPG
- Mu Online
- Record of Lodoss War: The Advent of Kardiss
- Terraworld Online
