Combat-oriented computer role-playing game

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Combat-oriented RPGs are computer games of a specific sub-genre of hack and slash action role-playing games as exemplified by Diablo; in fact many games of this genre are described as diablo clones. They are generally home computer games rather than console, as they commonly employ a mouse point-and-click control system.

Key features include:

  • Features commonly associated with RPGs (stats, items etc)
  • Player control of a single character (although often in a multiplayer team)
  • In-game situations being resolved by combat rather than puzzle-solving or dialogue
  • Almost continuous combat action
  • Plot and dialogue being kept to a minimum

This genre can be considered a cross-over between the RPG and fighting game genres.
