The Colt ACR was Colt's entry in the U.S. DoD Advanced Combat Rifle of the 1980s. It culminated in trials in the early 1990s, and concluded in 1992. The result was that none of the entrants achieved enough of an improvement over the M-16 to be worth the cost. The end of the Cold War may also have played a factor in the decision.

The Colt ACR was not a total loss however, the scope went on to be offered as by Elcan, a version of which was eventually adopted as the M145 Machine Gun Optic as being used a number of other firearms, especially those from Diemaco.
