Colmesneil is a city in Tyler County, Texas, United States. It is located 9 miles north of Woodville on U.S. Highway 69. The population was 638 at the 2000 census.

Colmesneil is located at 30°54′30″N, 94°25′25″W (30.908331, -94.423522)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²), all land.

[edit] Historical development

The town’s name came from one of the first conductors on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad which ran through the county.[1] The Trinity and Sabine Railroad would extend a 66 mile line from Colmesneil to Trinity, establishing the town as the shipping focal point for the county from 1881. Timber and cattle were the foremost commodities to sell due to the steep slope of the terrain. From the 1880’s, the Yellow Pine Lumber Company would operate a mill there, and for a while, Colmesneil’s population would be greater than Beaumont.[2]

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 638 people, 230 households, and 175 families residing in the city. The population density was 122.6/km² (318.1/mi²). There were 287 housing units at an average density of 55.1/km² (143.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.17% White, 10.19% African American, 0.16% Native American, 4.39% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.11% of the population.

There were 230 households out of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 83.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $22,396, and the median income for a family was $28,375. Males had a median income of $26,750 versus $18,438 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,332. About 12.1% of families and 17.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.8% of those under age 18 and 13.6% of those age 65 or over.
