[edit] Overview
CEC was established in the year 1992. In this challenging period, the college was set up with a vision to create engineers having the drive, skill and confidence to become pioneers of tomorrow. Today, CEC is graded third [citation needed] among all engineering colleges in Kerala. The college was set up under the auspices of the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) and is recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi. The college is located in Chengannur, Alapuzha. Students of CEC are commonly called CECians.
[edit] Courses offered
CEC's courses are designed to cater to the industry's urgent demand for skilled professionals in the fields of computers and electronics. CEC offers courses leading to four-year B.Tech. degrees in two branches. These branches are:
- Computer Science and Engineering (formerly, Computer Engineering)
- Electronics and Communication Engineering (formerly, Electronics Engineering)
The degrees are awarded by the internationally acclaimed Cochin University of Science and Technology. The syllabi are updated every two years to keep them in sync with changing trends in the above branches of engineering. By virtue of their vast scope, these syllabi are considered to be among the finest in the country.
[edit] Admission
Admission to the aforementioned courses happens on an annual basis and is based on the All Kerala Common Entrance Examination conducted by the Controller of Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala. Fifty percent of the seats are reserved for management quota.
[edit] Annual intake
CEC has an annual intake of 180 students divided among the two branches as follows:
- Computer Science and Engineering: 90
- Electronics and Communication Engineering: 90

[edit] IEEE student branch
An IEEE student branch was formed in CEC in mid 1997, with the goal of keeping the students in touch with the latest technological advances as they happen across the world. An IEEE library was inaugurated in December 1999. The library houses various journals and magazines of IEEE (34 magazines and 24 transactions in a month). The library subscribes to publications from 20 major IEEE societies like the Computer society, the Communications society, the Consumer electronics society, the Aerospace and Electronics society, the Signal processing society, and so on.
The IEEE student branch of CEC is the largest in the Asia-Pacific region[citation needed] and has been adjudged the best IEEE student branch in the Kerala section. Recently the IEEE headquarters at New York, agreed to set up a lab for Robotics, Electronics and Computers in the campus and has already forwarded a grant of $5000 for this purpose. The IEEE student branch comes under the IEEE Kerala Section (http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r10/kerala/)
CEC's IEEE student members have presented various projects at State and National level conferences and competitions. The IEEE team won second prize at the ISTE National Conference held at Hyderabad for creating a moving platform with temperature sensing capability. An IEEE Robotics Initiative Program has also commenced with different groups designing different types of robots. A competition was held for designing the IEEE website and our students were in the top ten in 2000 and finished fifth in the year 2003.
[edit] PRODDEC (Product Design and Development Centre)
PRODDEC provides a common platform for students of both branches to generate synergy based on their ideas and sharpen their technical skills. It organizes seminars by eminent professionals and engineers and publishes a bimonthly technical journal called Breakthrough. Industrial visits are conducted on a regular basis. Orientation classes and workshops are conducted for the students of various semesters. Ideas for products suggested by members are assured into the design stage by consultations with experts and are considered for marketing. PRODDEC won the best stall prize in Summit 2002, the inter-collegiate technology festival organized by CECians. It has played a major role in developing interest in hardware technologies among students. It also conducts seminars on various new technologies.
[edit] FOCES (Forum of Computer Engineering Students)
FOCES has succeeded in organizing weekly events, keeping in mind its aim to usher the students into a whole new world of ideas, knowledge, and practical training and job prospects. It has also succeeded in bringing experts to talk to the students on subjects of their interests. FOCES has helped several students to bag prestigious awards in paper presentation competitions, software development projects and national quiz competitions. Newsletters and CDs are brought on regular basis to keep the students abreast of the latest trends.
[edit] ExESS (ElectroniCS Engineering Students Society)
The aim of this society is to increase the technical awareness of its members by adequate exposure to the latest developments. The activities of the ExESS have helped students in attending various state and national level contests and to achieve top honors. The CD compilations brought out by ExESS - ExESS Explorer and ExESS Vigyan were a great success in terms of both content and popularity.
[edit] FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open-Source Software) Cell
FLOSS Cell has been organised in view of instilling in young minds the spirit of Open Source and Linux. The cell conducts Linux familiarisation classes, installation sessions and other activities in a regular basis.
[edit] Non-Technical Organizations
[edit] Santhwanam
Integrated with the NSS unit, it ignites the vision of providing selfless service to the society. Orientation programs and seminars highlighting value based education are conducted to promote virtue of simple living and high thinking amongst the students. Santhwanam undertakes campus cleaning drives. The unit received laurels for sending its volunteers to the Pulse-Polio Immunization programs of the Government of India. Santhwanam has organized orphanage visits. It has done lots of charity work and is the one organization that brings but the human side in an Engineer.

CEC has joined hands with the "Save the Earth" global movement through the `Aranyam' forestry club. Group discussions, awareness camps and occasional visits to nearby sanctuaries are some of the activities of the club.
[edit] Arts Club
ACE (Arts Club for Engineers) provides a platform for students to develop their creative skills. Its various associations and clubs like Music club, Quiz and Debate club and Audio Visual club bring together students with common interests and hobbies. The Arts Club organizes "Utsav", the college arts festival.
