Collectible miniatures game

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Collectible Miniatures Games or CMGs are a form of miniature wargaming that is also similar to Collectible Card Games (CCGs) — the primary difference being that while CCGs are card-based games, CMGs feature miniatures.

Like miniature wargames, a popular theme for CMGs are strategy wargames, since games of that genre typically feature miniatures such as: soldiers, vehicles, etc. Miniature wargames have been around for a long time, but the idea of a collectible miniature wargame is recent. In a conventional miniature wargame, players purchase the miniatures they want and generally invest time in assembling, painting, and otherwise decorating those miniatures for use in play. Some players find the process of preparing miniatures to be irksome, while for others that process is the entire appeal of the thing. In a CMG, players must spend effort collecting the miniatures that they want to play with, and often these miniatures come pre-assembled and pre-painted so that no additional effort is required.

Perhaps the most popular and well-known CMG to date is HeroClix, which is themed after comic-book superheroes such as Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man. Other popular CMGs are Mage Knight, Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures, Star Wars Miniatures, and Dreamblade.
