Set in a fictional Georgia, United States, town called Cold Sassy (and based on the actual city Harmony Grove, now Commerce) during 1905-1906, it follows the life of Will Tweedy, and explores themes such as religion, death, and social taboos. The sequel to the novel is Leaving Cold Sassy, which was published after Burns' death.
[edit] Plot summary
Eight years after the fact, Will Tweedy looks back upon the events which took place shortly following the death of his grandmother, starting with his grandfather's remarriage to a young woman by the name of Miss Love Simpson. Their marriage was initially intended as one of convenience so that Will's grandfather would have someone to help him keep his house tidy, cook, etc. Over the course of the book the two eventually fall in love and by the end of the book Miss Love is pregnant with his child.
