Col du Tourmalet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Col du Tourmalet is a mountain pass at 42°55′N 0°09′E in the Central French Pyrenees. It is 2,114 metres (6,935 ft) high.

Col du Tourmalet is one of the most famous of the mountain climbs on the Tour de France bicycle race. Although the Tour route varies from year to year, the Tourmalet has been included more often than any other mountain pass, starting in 1910, when the Pyrenees were introduced in the race.

The ski station La Mongie is located on the eastern side of Col du Tourmalet.

Tourmalet is also the name of a cheese made from sheep's milk produced in these mountains.
