"Coffee Shop" is a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers from their 1995 album, One Hot Minute. It is the fifth track on the album and was released as its fourth single with a promotional music video in 1996. Its heavy use of guitar distortion led fans of the band to complain that it was nothing like the band's 'sound'.
At the 1 minute 35 second mark in the song, there is a musical interlude in which bassist Flea plays a bass solo using a wah pedal with guitarist Dave Navarro providing a slight guitar effect riff accompaniment. At the two minute 30 second mark, Flea plays another bass solo over Navarro's distorted guitar riff with the rest of the band. The song ends with a climax of heavy, chaotic distortion.
Like many of the songs on One Hot Minute, "Coffee Shop"'s lyrics are cryptic and often bizarre. The track is also notable for appearing on the album between two much more subdued and softer songs, "My Friends" (an acoustic ballad) and "Pea", which features only Flea playing bass and singing on his own. This creates a significant, unpredictable contrast, especially when considering how the extreme loudness of the song abrubtly kicks in and halts with very little warning.
