[edit] History
The company was founded by Gerhard Hunkemöller in 1954. He developed a water-based floor sealant and immediately recognized a gap in the market and founded the COELIT-SOCIETY, which was concerned with the production and distribution of floor impregnations from then on. Plastic coatings and repair mortars gradually extended the product range.
His son Paul Hunkemöller took over the company in 1963. These days were also the establishment of the ongoing co-operation with the Bayer AG as supplier for polyurethane raw materials, which still represents the basis for many of our high quality products.
The PU-foam processing became the main operating field of the company, so that it expanded to one of the most important processing plants for PU-foam in Germany. Changed market conditions, in particular the FCKW (Chlorofluorocarbons) discussion, led 1987 to the decision to stop the PU-foam processing gradually. This was the birth of the different COELAN societies.
Under new name and with support of the sons Jochen and Peter Hunkemöller, the company focused on a diversification and extension of the product program. Liquid coating systems and special products were invented. Many of them have been successfully applied in the reconstruction of buildings and in the industry.
[edit] About COELAN
The invention of COETRANS-BALCONY COATING was probably the most important success for the company, as a wide range of products for the renovation of balconies and terraces result from this material. But also the COELASTIC-ROOF COATING and the COERAMIK-TILE COATING can be named as important product developments of the company. In 1992, COELAN chemical engineers adapted these building related products to the marine and boating environment. COELAN MARINE COATING has enjoyed exceptional success in Europe and become a leading brand in the marine industry. In 1997, the decorative floor coatings of LIQUID MARBLE and COEFFEKT appeared as a further innovation.
Almost 50 patents and registered designs occupy the flexibility and innovation ability of COELAN.
In 1998, the formerly medium-sized private company changed into the ownership of Industrie-Beteiligungs-Gesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (IBG) Cologne. IBG currently comprises middle-sized companies mainly in the fields of welding technology, building chemicals and components. With foreign companies worldwide, IBG in partnership with COELAN offers the ideal conditions and synergies for the further national development, and in particular the international development, of sales in construction chemistry products. In the section of building chemistry, the strengths of the IBG-subsidiaries KEMPER SYSTEM and COELAN are bundled under the name KEMCO. To date there are KEMCO-subsidiaries located in China, England, France, India, Italy, the Japan and in the USA.
